PRODUCT SPECIFICATION

MOUNTING POST AND PEDESTAL

1.      The requirements for utilization of mounting posts and pedestals are intended for use in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70. The enclosure shall have a 3R rating. The mounting post and pedestal unit, although not restricted to such use, is intended for outdoor locations such as:

a.   Repairing damaged or deteriorated conduit / weatherproof box installations.

b.   Branch circuits to detached building sites.

c.   Golf courses and support structures.

d.   Amusement parks and theme parks.

e.   Commercial malls and town centers.

f.    Municipal parkways.

g.   Landscaped roadway median strips.

h.   Receptacles for seasonal display lighting.

i.    Automatic door switch mounting posts for handicapped access door operators.

j.    Residential or municipal gardens.

k.   Decorative ponds;  pumps, lighting, and accessory equipment

l.    To compensate for the results of soil subsidence caused by natural compaction or freeze / thaw cycles that occurs at any or all of these applications.

m.   Indoors: Power drops for factory machinery with requirements up to 60 amp, 600volt, 3 phase.

2.      The mounting post and pedestal unit shall be so constructed and listed by a recognized safety testing laboratory to perform as a stand alone, self supporting unit, in the ground, or, when used in conjunction with a mounting bracket, on a flat masonry, or concrete surface.  When used in the ground, and conditions exist that does not allow for a required minimum depth of 24 inches below grade, an accessory ground supporting “X” type anchor can be utilized to maintain a plumb and level installation.  Concrete or other equivalent material can be used to backfill the hole.

3.      The flat surface mounting type bracket shall be available in a single mounting post or pedestal supporting bracket configuration, or one available to support two pedestal units, in a back to back configuration; and also to have a listing with a recognized safety testing laboratory, for the usage for which it is intended.  Four mounting holes are provided with each base.  A pattern template is to be available to use preset anchoring bolts or marking of holes to be drilled for setting anchors.

4.      The mounting post or pedestal unit shall have an unrestricted bottom opening 5 inches wide by 2 ½ inches deep; incorporating slots on both sides, that extend up 6 inches, to help in the placement of underground raceways or direct burial cables.  The conduits or direct burial cables are to extend up into the mounting post or pedestal unit and  not to be secured to the mounting post or pedestal, or clamped to the mounting post or pedestal in any manner.  Independent movement of  the mounting post and pedestal  must remain free from the supplying or exiting conduits or direct burial cables at all times.

5.      The mounting post and pedestal unit shall be so constructed and listed by a recognized safety testing laboratory to accommodate conduit raceways up to 11/4 inch trade size or #6 direct burial cables.

6.      The mounting post or pedestal unit shall have the direct burial cables or pulled in wires trained in appropriate “S” loops to allow for movement of an installed post or pedestal caused by freezing/thawing cycles, or soil subsidence or compaction to occur without stressing the wire terminations.

7.      The mounting post or pedestal unit shall have a length of removable cover on the front side, secured by one mounting screw on the top, while the bottom of the cover incorporates  an upturned clamping groove mating with a reversed turned down lip formed on the base of the post or pedestal.  The turned down lip on the base of the post or pedestal unit provides a  rounded corner across to full width of the unit, and allows for wires to be pulled into their conduits across a smooth surface.

8.      The mounting post or pedestal unit shall have the required size opening and screw hole configuration to allow installation of NEMA style wiring devices and covers, or plates.  The “in use” covers can be either plastic or metallic.

9.      The mounting post or pedestal unit shall be available as a single gang unit, with either a vertical or horizontal oriented device opening.  Two gang models shall also be available in the vertical oriented device style opening.

10.    The mounting post or pedestal unit shall be available with a option on all two gang models for a divider running full length from top to bottom, allowing for separation of services.  600 volt  cables and wiring devices can be separated from voice / data, or other low voltage cabling and utilization devices.

11.    The mounting posts and pedestals shall be manufactured using a minimum of .070 cold rolled steel # 1020.  The protective coating shall have a 600 hour salt spray rating, with a 1200 hour moist carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, air mixture exposure.  Underwriters Laboratories specification # MH6892 process shall be the type supplied on both the mounting posts or pedestal units,  and the mounting brackets, The coating is a cationic epoxy electrocoat, with a polyester topcoat.

12.     The mounting posts and pedestals shall be optionally manufactured using a minimum of .070stainless steel # 304 weldable with a 4b finish.

13.     Grounding of all mounting posts and pedestal units shall conform with all requirements of the National Electrical Code, or local building code, that is in use where the units are installed.  To facilitate grounding of the mounting posts and pedestals they are to be supplied and  delivered with a 1/4-20 stud, nut, washer, and lug to accommodate a grounding wire sized from # 14 to # 6. Grounding bushings are to be installed on all entering and exiting metallic conduits.  Grounding wires are to be pulled in with circuit conductors installed with plastic conduits or raceways, and are suggested to be pulled in metallic raceways, along with their circuit conductors.

14.     Mounting posts or pedestals have no prepositioned or knockout locations provided.  Mounting holes for fixtures or photo cells are to be drilled in the field.  Fastening or anchoring holes to anchor the mounting posts or pedestals to a structure or pole etc shall be field drilled.  Mounting holes in the top of the mounting post or pedestal for light fixtures or other devices shall be fitted with a Meyer’s hub, sealing washer, or sealing locknut.

15.     Mounting posts or pedestals are to be mounted a minimum of 6 inches above grade level.  When installed in an area where lawn maintenance equipment is to be used, an appropriate height level needs to be determined so covers and devices are safe from damage by mowing and trimming equipment.  Mounting posts or pedestals are to be available in lengths of 30 inches, 36 inches, 42 inches, 48 inches, and 54 inches.
